Google Forms updates and tips

There have been some significant and simple changes since my last post about Google Forms and I thought it was time to get the word out for all you avid Forms users out there.

• Quizzes- Not a brand new feature, but I'm continuously surprised when I talk to folks who are still unaware of this added piece in Google Forms. You can now go to 'Settings' and turn your Form into an assessment with the ability to provide quick feedback. This is a great quick alternative to using the add-on, Flubaroo, in the Response Sheet you gather from a Form, but I wouldn't throw out Flubaroo completely.  *TIP*  You have the ability to add feedback for correct and incorrect answers which can include links to online resources or videos.

• Collect Email addresses - In the past you had two options in order to collect a Form takers email address. 1. If you belong to an organization you could collect their username (aka email address) to easy identify your responses and provide feedback. (Sometimes created confusion if your Form taker wasn't signed in to the correct account) 2. You simply create a question that asks for their email address and hope they didn't mistype a character. (Data Validation can be used to help mitigate user error) Now you can select 'Collect email address' which will automatically insert a short answer question asking for the form taker's email which includes Data Validation to try and ensure you collect a valid email and you can force a 'Response receipt' or give the Form taker the option to receive their responses to their email for their own records. *TIP* Great option to use in conjuction with the add-on Choice Eliminator to create sign-up forms (Conferences, parties, BBQs, etc...) and ensure that the Form taker gets record of their choice.

Select 'Collect email address' to insert a short answer question on your form asking your respondents to submit their email. You can then opt in for Response receipts.

• Video feedback- I can not take any credit for this last tip. I learned it from the amazing Richard Byrne and his website/blog Practical Ed Tech which if you're not following or subscribing to his YouTube playlist you're doing yourself a disservice. By utilizing the ability to separate a form into different sections and then use the 'go to section based on response' option in a multiple choice question you can direct Form takers to review YouTube videos if they make a correct or incorrect choice. This is a great way to have instant feedback and focus on the understanding of a topic instead of right and wrong. You can find a sample I've created HERE, but I recommend you watch Richard Byrne's video to get a great step by step explanation.
